What we look for
- AI generator signatures
- Stable Diffusion and its relatives write the prompt and settings straight into the file. Others stamp their name into the EXIF. When that is there, it is about as direct as evidence gets: the file is telling you itself.
- Content Credentials
- The C2PA standard, backed by Adobe, OpenAI, Google and others. A cryptographic signature saying who made an image and how, including whether a generator was involved. Real proof when it survives.
- Camera and editing data
- Which camera took it, when, and what software touched it since. Easy to fake, so we label it a clue rather than a fact.
Why we will not give you a percentage
Most AI detectors guess from the pixels. They are trained on yesterday's generators, so they miss today's, and they routinely tell real artists that their own work is fake. That number feels satisfying and it is frequently wrong, and being wrong in that direction does real damage to the exact people this is supposed to protect.
There is a harder problem underneath. A screenshot strips every marker in the list above. So does a re-upload on most social platforms. That is why the honest answer for most images on the internet is that nobody can tell you, and why we say that out loud instead of filling the silence with a number.

Since a file cannot be trusted to describe itself after it has travelled, the proof has to be made at the moment of publishing, by the person who made it. That is what Pudding does: register what you publish and it gets a public, timestamped record anyone can check against the original, whatever a screenshot strips out later.
